Ph.D. Students

Ramon Saiz-Rodriguez

Ramon Saiz Rodriguez is a Ph.D. Candidate in Hydrologic Sciences at the University of California, Davis, and a part-time graduate student researcher in the Water Management Lab. His doctoral research focuses on the basin of the Rio Grande; Ramon’s interests include climate change and water resources management as well as communication between science, policymaking, and society. Ramon holds an M.Sc. in geology and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Sonora, México. For his master’s, Ramon worked with evapotranspiration in a crop field using Eddy Covariance method and remote sensing to improve irrigation systems and water uses. His professional development has been oriented to hydraulic, hydrology, and topography, including hydraulic modeling of rivers, channels, and floodplains, and the handling of digital geographic information, remote sensing, and GPS operation in the state of Sonora as well as other states in Mexico.  Gabriela Rendon Herrera

Gabriela is pursuing a Masters in Ecology at the University of California, Davis. Gabriela holds a B.S. Biology from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico, where she earned a Bachelor Thesis with Honors with the project “Relationship between short-term stress response and cause-effect association of the Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus)”. Most of her experience in science conservation and socialization projects has been in the non-governmental organization sector. She was Head of the Communication Department at Pronatura Noreste A.C. (2016-2020), a non-governmental organization that seeks the environmental conservation of the biodiversity of the Mexican northeast. Gabriela is a founding member of the College of Solidarity Biologists of the State of Nuevo León A.C. (2021). She is also a founding member of the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters (PFBW), an organization which pursues the dissemination and socialization of scientific knowledge on binational hydrological basins along the US-Mexico border to strengthen decision-making related to water management. Currently, Gabriela holds the position of Strategic Communication Manager (Feb 2020- to date) at the PFBW.. Email: grendonherrera@ucdavis.edu

Visiting Scholars

  Gunay Hasanova

Gunay Hasanova graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Baku State University in Azerbaijan with honors, with specialties in hydrology and climatology. She has 15 years of experience at governmental institutions in field water management, forecast of weather and surface water, and production of energy from water resources. She also worked for four years as a lecturer. She currently works as a senior specialist at Hydraulic Service in Electricity Generating Operation at “Azerenergy” OJSC. In addition, Gunay worked as Azerbaijan climate change and hydrology expert at UNDP GEF Kura Project “Advancing Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) across the Kura river basin through the implementation of the transboundary agreed actions and national plans.” She was the winner of the Stimulation of Earth Observation for Sustainable Development of Azerbaijan Project for 2018-2019 of “Azercosmos” OJSC (Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan) on the project "Prediction of snow-water resources for the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus using high-resolution digital elevation models." As a Humphrey Fellow at UC Davis, Gunay's research aims to explore how the U.S. sustainably and efficiently uses natural resources, especially water resources. In addition, she would like to improve her skills in GIS and remote sensing, hydrology engineering models and early warning systems, and gaining this experience, she wants to apply it to her own country.
