Overview
The California Water Stewards is a bilingual (English and Español) continuing education (CE) program. It is designed for anyone 18 years of age or older (general audience) who is interested about water in California and would like to become a California Water Steward.
The California Water Stewards program provides you with foundational knowledge about the water cycle, water systems, and California water laws. You will also develop your own Water Stewards project to protect, save, conserve, and restore California's water resources. This program is based on a flexible and hands-on learning approach that strengthens your knowledge and your hands-on skills.
This 12-hour hybrid course combines:
- Self-guided content (up to 4 hours): Online educational materials (Guidebook or videos) that you can review at your own pace.
- Water Stewardship Project (up to 7 hours): Design and execute a water stewardship project based on your personal interest. You will have to take part in one event that protects, conserves, and/or restores water in California.
- One remote event (1 hour): Share your stewardship project with other water stewards and build community.
At the end of the program, you'll receive a certificate for 12 continuing education hours. Enrollment is ongoing and rolling, so you can register at any time.
Audience
This is a general adult audience course for any people interested about Water in California who wants to learn fundamental knowledge of water systems, water laws in california and develop your own Water Stewardship Service Project.

Logistics of the Course
This is a self guided course that you can take at any time. The course consist in three main steps to finish your course:
Step 1: You will have to review the educational materials: Module 1 - Water systems. Module 2 - Water Policies, and Module 3 - Water Stewardship. There are two ways of doing this: (a) You can read the Guidebook, or (b) You can watch the educational content in your preferred social media (Facebook, Instagram or TikTok) or YouTube.
Step 2: Each module requires that you respond a questionnaire and respond correctly 80% of the questions.
Step 3: You will have to develop, execute and share a Water Stewardship Service Project. Module 3 will provide you the instructions for designing an attainable Water Stewardship service project for yourself. You will have to design it and execute it. Then, you will have to register for office hours (once every month) and you will describe your Water Stewardship Service Project to your main instructor, Dr. Samuel Sandoval Solis.
Once you have passed the three questionnaires (one for each module) and presented your Water Stewardship Service Project to your instructor, you will received a certificate of 12 Continuing Education hours for Water in California and Stewardship.

California Water Course for Advocates and Professionals
The California Water Course for Advocates and Professionals is a course designed for water advocates, community leaders and entry level water professionals who want to develop water system assessment of a system you are interested. By the end of the course participants will (a) develop a thorough analysis of your water system, (b) identify the water policies and regulations that apply, and (c) advocate for their own communities for improved water management. This is a 40 hour professional development course that occurs every other year in different Hydrologic regions throughout California. For participants meeting the requirements, they will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Hydrologic Regions and years:
- Odd years (e.g. 2026, 2028): Sacramento Basin, San Joaquin - Tulare, and San Francisco
- Even years (e.g. 2027, 2029): Central Coast, South Coast, and Colorado River (Coachella-Imperial Valley)
